A smart move for a bright future

Since moving to ACG Sunderland earlier this year, school life has been nothing but plain sailing for student Akarsh Shankar.

When Akarsh Shankar joined ACG Sunderland’s Year 7 cohort at the beginning of 2021, he was understandably a little apprehensive about starting at a new school. However, thanks to the welcoming community and exciting opportunities he has encountered at ACG, his transition has been a cinch.

Not only is the 11-year-old loving the Cambridge Curriculum, but he has made a wide group of new friends and is embracing all that’s on offer with enthusiasm and gusto.

“Moving from my old school to Sunderland was not as hard as I thought it would be, even though I only had three subjects in my old school compared to 11 subjects now,” says Akarsh.

“I was worried I might not be able to handle the workload and responsibilities, but my teachers have been very helpful. They make sure we all understand what we are learning, and there are plenty of chances to ask questions. Plus, everyone is kind and friendly, so I’ve found it easy to make new friends.”

Akarsh’s range of supportive and dedicated teachers are experts in their field, ensuring he and his classmates are in the best possible hands as they take the first steps on their College journey. This stewardship, teamed with stimulating and inspiring subject choices, make for a winning combination.
“What I like most about ACG Sunderland is that I learn such a variety of subjects from specialised teachers.”

With a particular interest in science (“we get to do practical experiments”) and PE (“I like learning how to play new sports”), Akarsh has a great deal to look forward to – and he even includes assessments in that category.

“The best thing about studying the Cambridge Curriculum is that I get to do exams and tests. This helps me see my progress and learn how to cope with pressure at a young age.”

While he’s only been at the school for a short time, Akarsh is already making his mark. He has become a valued member of the ACG Sunderland badminton and cricket teams, counts the school athletics day and cross country among his greatest 2021 highlights, and puts his hand up for everything available to him. For a student who loves giving things a go, he couldn’t be in a better place.

“I’m really happy to be a member of this school because of the opportunities such as sports council, student voice group, class captain and peer tutoring, not to mention the awesome facilities like the gym and the laboratories.”

While 2021 may not be over just yet, Akarsh is eagerly anticipating the arrival of 2022. He is already looking forward to what the new year will bring, especially the Year 8 camp, which promises to be a fun and adventure-filled undertaking. And with an eye to the future, the highly motivated student eventually plans to become a neurosurgeon.

In the meantime, though, he has some valuable advice to share with next year’s Year 7 newcomers.

“Be organised by using your diary and make long-lasting friendships so you can enjoy your time throughout your school life.”
