New Zealand’s National Grandparents Day is a day to celebrate the happiness that grandparents can bring to a young person’s life, and to highlight just how much they are respected, appreciated and adored. Whether related by blood, or related by love, the strong bond formed between many grandparents and their grandchildren is deep and enduring.
Abigail Cosgrove is a Year 4 student at ACG Sunderland and this lucky eight-year-old is fortunate enough to see her beloved nana, Jackie Cosgrove, every day. Together they read books, share stories and enjoy great adventures. Nana is clearly a very special person in her life, as Abigail explains.
What sort of things do you like doing with Nana?
I like reading books with her, she drives me places, on Saturdays we watch America’s Got Talent, sometimes we shop together.
What are your favourite things about Nana?
I like that she gives warm hugs, she reads great books to me and I like that she spends her time with me.
How different do you think things were when your Nana went to school?
Teachers wrote on chalk boards not white boards. And most people left school once they turned 16 and went to work.
If you could do anything, what would be your perfect day with Nana?
I would like to have lots of fun with her and make her laugh.
How do you show your Nana how important she is to you?
I normally do something special for her. I put balloons in the family room sometimes to surprise her and make her happy. I like to hug Nana and she calls me a “perfect child”.
