For ACG Sunderland Principal Nathan Villars, it starts with high expectations, strong relationships and giving students the opportunity to discover what they are capable of.
Nathan recently joined One Voice for the West to reflect on his 35 years in education and the journey of ACG Sunderland, from its beginnings with just 66 students to the high-performing school it is today.
Having been part of the school from its early days, Nathan has played an important role in developing a culture built around academic achievement, Cambridge pathways, sport, music, house culture and a wide range of co-curricular opportunities.
For Nathan, a strong education is about more than results. The Cambridge curriculum provides students with a rigorous academic foundation and internationally recognised qualifications, but the habits developed along the way - work ethic, discipline, resilience and a commitment to doing your best - are equally important.
He also highlights the role of sport, music, drama, dance and other activities in helping students build confidence and develop a genuine sense of belonging.
As West Auckland’s only independent Cambridge-based school, ACG Sunderland also has a strong connection to the community it serves. Nathan reflects on why the school was established to give local families another education option closer to home, and the importance of its ongoing relationships with organisations across the region.
Ultimately, Nathan’s message is about preparing students for more than their next academic step. It is about giving them the confidence, skills and sense of connection to make the most of the opportunities ahead.
