In the eyes of others, he goes above and beyond, but Tyler says helping out is all in a day’s work.

“I’ve always just offered to help around the school whenever something needed to be done,” he says. “I was really surprised to receive this award as helping in the community is just something I do, without any expectations.”

Tyler started at ACG Sunderland as a Year 0 foundation student and believes the school has played an intrinsic role in shaping the big-hearted person he has become.

“The school has taught me to get involved as much as I can and contribute where I can. As I’ve grown older, I’ve learnt the value of teamwork and the importance of encouraging others to achieve their goals. It’s a rewarding feeling just knowing you have helped to make a difference.”

Learning at ACG Sunderland is underpinned by a strong values-based programme which sees students develop into caring and compassionate citizens who make a positive difference to the world around them.

“The school encourages students to contribute to the community and become involved in as many ways as possible, from fundraisers, leadership opportunities and assisting at events to just generally being proactive and offering assistance on a day-to-day basis,” says Tyler. “The house system also organises services within the community both at Sunderland and locally, and students are encouraged to support these events.”

This year, Tyler is the house leader for Whenuapai and as an invaluable member of the sports council he also helps run lunchtime sports activities and assists with larger events such as athletics day and swimming sports. Life is busy, but he loves it.

“I enjoy being involved with the school leadership team, and knowing we are making a genuine difference in the school community.”

Now in his final year, Tyler’s goal is to study Engineering at the University of Auckland. While he is excited at the prospect, he will also be sad to farewell an institution that has played such a leading role in his formative years.

“I’ve loved being a student at ACG Sunderland. I’ve made great friends and I’ve had great teachers. Everyone here wants to do their best, so it is a fantastic environment to be a part of.”
