ACG Sunderland proudly opened its striking new Senior College building at the start of Term 1 2025, marking the completion of an $11 million NZD investment that sets a new benchmark for learning environments in West Auckland.
The purpose-built facility was delivered as a Design and Build project by Pure Construction NZ Ltd, in partnership with DCA Architects, whose vision and craftsmanship have created an inspiring and sustainable addition to the campus. Initial planning and design began in mid-2022, with construction commencing in October 2023. The project reached completion in December 2024, perfectly timed for students to move in at the start of the 2025 academic year.
Designed for Growth and Connection
The new building was developed to accommodate ACG Sunderland’s continued growth, featuring modern classrooms, two state-of-the-art science laboratories, dedicated study and common areas for senior students, and weather-protected outdoor spaces that extend learning beyond the classroom. Every detail has been carefully considered to foster collaboration, curiosity, and wellbeing - hallmarks of the ACG learning experience.
Principal Nathan Villars says the new Senior College building represents a milestone for the school’s future and a tangible investment in student success.
“This new facility reflects our vision for education - forward-thinking, inclusive, and designed to inspire. It provides our students and teachers with spaces that encourage connection, collaboration, and creativity,” says Mr Villars. “We’re incredibly proud to see how this building has transformed the campus, creating an environment where our senior students can truly thrive.”
Award-Winning Architecture
This impressive project has already been recognised for its architectural excellence, receiving a Highly Commended Award at the Auckland Regional ADNZ Architectural Awards. The judging panel praised the building’s thoughtful integration into its sloping site, its welcoming entry, and clever use of passive ventilation to enhance comfort and air quality.
“This project employs a fragmented form in its façade to sensitively respond to the contours of its sloping site. The resulting massing softens the building’s presence within the landscape, enhancing its integration with the terrain and defining a welcoming and legible point of entry. Internally, passive ventilation strategies are effectively deployed, recognising the importance of thermal comfort and air quality in contemporary learning environments. The project strikes a balance between architectural expression and functional performance in an educational context.”
A Future-Focused Space for Learning
Designed by DCA Architects, the building seamlessly blends architectural expression with practical performance - an environment that celebrates both innovation and functionality. The open, light-filled spaces promote focus, wellbeing, and community, ensuring that ACG Sunderland students have every opportunity to succeed.
“It’s not just a building- it’s a statement about who we are and where we’re heading,” adds Mr Villars. “We’re preparing students for the future, and this new space gives them the very best foundation to learn, lead, and grow.”
As ACG Sunderland looks ahead, the new Senior College building reinforces the school’s position as a leader in innovative education in West Auckland. Combining architectural excellence with a student-centred approach, it will continue to provide a dynamic environment that fosters growth, inspiration, and the next generation of learners and leaders.
