Basketball is on the rise at ACG Sunderland - and now our students have a brand-new home court advantage. The school has recently completed a major $400,000 upgrade project, transforming the outdoor courts with new high-performance turf and modern markings, creating an exceptional space for play, training and competition.

A Major Upgrade for a Growing Sport

The upgrade includes brand-new turf, refreshed court markings, and improved play surfaces that enhance grip, bounce and overall safety. The transformation not only modernises the space but also brings a professional finish to an area that’s become one of the school’s busiest sporting zones.

The project reflects the school’s ongoing investment in sport and wellbeing, ensuring that every student - from casual players to competitive athletes - can enjoy an environment that’s engaging, inspiring and built for performance.

“Interest in basketball continues to grow at Sunderland,” says Philip Keen, Head of Sport. “Students from all year levels are getting involved, and the upgraded courts will only help strengthen that enthusiasm and provide an even better space to play and compete.”

More Than a Game

Basketball has become one of ACG Sunderland’s fastest-growing sports. Students in Years 7–8, 9–10 and U17/U19 compete in local competitions, supported by dedicated coaches who focus on teamwork, resilience and skill development.

The sport’s inclusive nature - offering opportunities for both beginners and advanced players - has made it a favourite across the school. The new courts will give all students, regardless of experience, a place to connect, play, and push themselves to achieve their best.

A Space for Everyone

Beyond competitive sport, the new courts are already proving popular for lunchtime games and house competitions, providing a dynamic outdoor space that brings the school together. Whether it’s a high-energy tournament or a friendly shoot-around, the upgraded courts are becoming a daily focal point of campus life.

“Basketball is more than just a sport here - it’s a community,” adds Philip. “It teaches teamwork, communication and confidence. Having facilities like these shows our students that their passions matter.”

Investing in the Future

This upgrade joins other recent campus developments that strengthen ACG Sunderland’s commitment to innovation and excellence. By providing high-quality facilities, the school continues to nurture students’ physical wellbeing alongside academic and creative growth.

As basketball continues to thrive, the new courts symbolise the school’s forward-thinking approach - creating spaces that inspire participation, pride, and school spirit.

“Our students have been so excited to play on the new surface,” says Principal, Nathan Villars. “It’s bright, modern and built to last - a fantastic addition that reflects the energy and ambition of our school community.”

The Final Whistle

With basketball participation higher than ever and the new courts now in action, ACG Sunderland is entering an exciting new chapter for sport. The investment is more than just an upgrade - it’s a commitment to giving every student the chance to play, grow and belong.
