ACG Sunderland is proud to announce that we have been officially selected by the New Zealand Chess Federation to represent New Zealand at the 2026 World Schools Team Championship – Asian Continental Championships.

The tournament will take place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from 6–11 April 2026 and will feature top Under-14 school teams from across the Asian continent.

A Prestigious Opportunity

This year marks an exciting new format for the World Schools Team Championship. While last year’s competition featured a single large finals stage held in the United States - where Wellington College represented New Zealand with pride and achieved an outstanding result - the 2026 event introduces continental qualifying tournaments. The top teams from each continent will then advance to a four-team Grand Final in December.

The championship is restricted to Under-14 teams, and ACG Sunderland has earned the honour of representing New Zealand after being crowned Intermediate School Champions at the 2025 New Zealand Interschool Finals in Christchurch.

Celebrating Excellence in Chess

This selection is a significant achievement for our students and reflects the strength of our chess programme, the dedication of our players, and the support of our coaches and community.

Competing on the international stage is an incredible opportunity, and we are immensely proud of our talented team as they prepare to take on the best young players in the region.

Congratulations to our chess champions - we wish them every success in Kazakhstan!
