ACG Sunderland’s Intermediate Chess Team has triumphed at the 2025 NZCF National Schools Chess Championships, taking home the title of New Zealand National Chess Champions in the Intermediate category (Years 7-8).

This outstanding achievement marks a historic milestone for the school and a moment of immense pride for the entire ACG Sunderland community. Over the course of the tournament, the Intermediate team demonstrated remarkable skill, consistency, and teamwork - remaining undefeated across seven rounds of intense competition. With six wins and one draw, they secured an incredible 13 match points and 22.5 game points, outpacing 29 other teams from across the country to claim the national title.

The competition, hosted by the New Zealand Chess Federation (NZCF), brought together the top-ranking regional schools from around the country to compete in Primary, Intermediate, and Secondary divisions. Representing the Auckland region, ACG Sunderland’s Intermediate team rose to the challenge with determination and composure, consistently delivering results against some of New Zealand’s most experienced young players.

“We are so proud of our students for this extraordinary result,” says Principal, Nathan Villars “Their focus, preparation, and teamwork were exemplary. Winning a national championship requires both mental strength and a supportive team environment - qualities that truly reflect the spirit of ACG Sunderland.”

Impressive Performances Across All Divisions

While the Intermediate team’s championship win headlined the event, ACG Sunderland’s Primary and Secondary teams also performed exceptionally well, reinforcing the school’s strength and depth across all levels of play.

Primary Division (Years 1–6)

Competing against 23 of the nation’s best primary-aged teams, the ACG Sunderland Primary team finished 7th overall, sharing 6th-8th position. They recorded three wins, three draws, and just one loss, finishing with 9 match points and 17.5 game points.
This result reflects the tremendous promise and talent emerging from Sunderland’s youngest competitors - many of whom are already showing the same discipline and strategic thinking that defines the school’s more experienced players. Their efforts also signal a bright future for the Intermediate and Secondary teams, with a strong foundation of young chess enthusiasts ready to advance through the ranks.

Fostering a Culture of Strategy, Focus, and Resilience

Chess at ACG Sunderland is more than a co-curricular pursuit - it is a cornerstone of the school’s holistic approach to education. Through chess, students learn to think several steps ahead, manage time under pressure, and develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that benefit them in every academic subject.

The school’s sustained success across multiple age groups reflects both student dedication and the guidance of passionate teachers and coaches who nurture curiosity, discipline, and a love for the game. The achievements at the national level reinforce the value of perseverance, patience, and intellectual courage - qualities that extend far beyond the chessboard.

“Chess teaches lessons in logic, creativity, and resilience,” added Sheba Butler, Head of Primary School. “Our students’ results this year show that those values are deeply embedded in our school culture.”
